The Spoon River College Dual Credit program helps high school students get an early start on their college education. By enrolling in specific programs and courses, eligible high school students can take Spoon River College courses for high school or college credit, or get job training to start a career after high school. Or, if eligible, high school students can take regular college courses at one of the college’s sites or even online.

Through these programs, students and their parents can benefit from discounts, scholarships, and Spoon River College’s already-low tuition rates. By taking courses at Spoon River College, you can avoid the higher cost of tuition and fees found at many four-year colleges and universities.

Dual Credit

Did you know that high school students in their junior and senior year, can take college courses? At their high school? During the regular school day?

Since 1999, Spoon River College has partnered with many area high schools to offer dual credit courses to eligible students. By taking a dual credit class, students not only earn college credit, but some high schools may also offer high school credit for the same class — a great two-for-one deal! While many of the dual credit courses are taught at the high school by high school teachers, they are college level classes, use college textbooks, many have reduced tuition rates and meet college standards. Students must be at least 16 years of age and have met requirements of the Accuplacer placement test and High School GPA requirements. To find out if your high school participates in the Spoon River College Dual Credit partnership, talk to your high school counselor.

**The tuition rate for high school students taking courses for dual credit with Spoon River College during the 2022-2023 school year is $80.00 per credit hour for courses taught at high schools. Tuition rate for courses taught on an SRC campus is $183.00 per credit hour, and the tuition rate for courses taught online is $205.00 per credit hour.

The Spoon River College Foundation offers a scholarship to eligible high school students that may cover part of the tuition charges. Please visit the Foundation page of the SRC website for more information.

If you have any questions regarding tuition charges for the dual credit program, please contact the Student Accounts Office at (309) 649-7021.

For High School Counselors

Welcome, high school counselors! This section is dedicated to covering basic information to prepare you to “co-advise” prospective or current dual credit students. Please contact the dual credit advisor who assists your school with any questions you may have.

  • Academic Programs
    • High School students are able to take almost any course offered by Spoon River College as long as they meet eligibility requirements and are approved by the high school. You can view all our course offerings and suggested academic plans in the SRC Course Catalog (link to catalog).
If students are questioning what course to take, please contact your SRC Dual Credit Advisor for guidance.
  • Class Schedule and Class Search
    • When registration is open, you can view the course schedules (on campus, online, or hybrid). Go to src.edu and click “Class Schedule” at the top of the page. To view if courses are open, use the “Course Search” function on that page to view specific courses and see what seats are available.
  • Dual Credit Scholarship
    • The SRC Foundation offers dual credit scholarships to assist eligible area high school students who want to begin earning college credit while still in high school. Scholarship awards are applied to a student’s account at SRC. If the account has been paid in full, the student will receive a refund check in the amount of the award. Preference will be given to those families with less than $65,000 gross annual income and a household totaling four or more people, but all may apply for consideration. Awards are subject to the availability of funds, and not all who apply will necessarily receive awards.
    • Awards are made after each semester begins. Application forms are available at the SRC Foundation Scholarship page. Complete, print, and sign the forms, and mail prior to the deadline to the SRC Foundation at the address listed on the form.  The entire application must be filled out; any field left blank will subject the application to disqualification.
    • These scholarships are limited to students attending SRC district high schools offering dual credit courses through Spoon River College. For more information, contact Dusty Berg or by phone at (309) 649-6395.

Dual Enrollment

Even if a high school does not offer a particular college course through the Dual Credit partnership, there are other opportunities for high school students to earn college credit through the Spoon River College Dual Credit program. Eligible high school students may take college courses at one of the college’s campuses or online. Many courses are available in the evening, allowing motivated students to obtain college credit while balancing their high school responsibilities. During the summer semester, eligible students can take a course or two and still have time to work part-time or just hang out with their friends. By taking college courses at Spoon River College while still in high school, students can experience a considerable savings over the life of their college education. Tuition at Spoon River College is 1/3 the cost of a public Illinois university and 1/8 of the cost of tuition at area private four-year colleges.
