Canton

Intro to Microsoft Excel-Canton
Tuesday, May 7, 3-6pm, SRC Canton Campus
Excel can help you create budgets, charts, schedules, and databases. Students in this class will learn the basics of Excel and how to apply it in everyday life. If you need to track anything in your life, Excel is the program you need! Instructor is Andrea Barbknecht. Fee is $39.

Paul Harvey in Canton: The Rest of the Story

For more than a half-century from the 1950’s through the early 2000’s he was the most listened-to man in radio with an estimated daily audience of 24 million people.  Paul Harvey was heard on more than 1,200 radio stations nationally and another 400 on Armed Forces Radio throughout the world.  On February 19, 1963 he came to Canton to speak at a Lincoln Day event.  We’ll listen to a preserved speech of this event and the three short programs he used on his radio broadcasts in the following months.  The speech covered everything from the just-ended Cuban Missile Crisis, to his thoughts on television, to political strife in the U.S., to human equality, and much more.  You might even discover things aren’t that much different today than they were 61 years ago!  We’ll have plenty of time for discussion and for you to share your stories and memories throughout the evening. Instructor is Kevin Stephenson. Fee is $25.

Safe@Home-Canton

Safe@Home is designed to prepare students for their first step toward independence so they can be safe when they are home alone. They’ll learn how to practice safe habits, prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. A take-home workbook is included in the class fee. This class is for 4th – 6th grade. Instructor is Andrea Barbknecht. Fee is $20.

The 1960’s – it was a special time in the music world!  From The Association to the Guess Who… Gary Puckett & The Union Gap to Steppenwolf…The Fifth Dimension to The Mamas & The Papas… and much more. This unique presentation allows YOU to be a big part of it!  Just like with Top-40 radio in the 60’s, the request line will be open. Attendees will choose songs from a list of 161 favorites from the era. Then, they’ll watch vintage videos of those top stars performing their biggest hits. Singing, dancing, and stories welcome! This class is back by popular demand with multiple dates to attend. Attend one or all of these unique presentations. Instructor is Kevin Stephenson. Fee is $25 per session.

ELDT Hazmat Training-Canton
Friday, June 21, 8-11am, SRC Canton Commercial Driver Training Facility
This 3-hour program covers all the topics required for federal ELDT certification for commercial drivers. It provides information on loading and transporting hazardous materials as well as emergency procedures and hazmat paperwork requirements. The program also includes the required federal assessment test. This training is a prerequisite for receiving a hazardous material endorsement on a CDL. Instructor is Bob Walter. Fee is $95.

Research on the Illinois River-Havana
Tuesday, May 21, 9am-Noon, North Boat Ramp at Havana Riverfront Park
The Illinois Natural History Survey’s Illinois River Biological Station’s mission is to gather environmental and biological data on the Illinois River. They are one of six stations of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program’s Long Term Resource Monitoring element (LTRM), and the home of the 60-year old Long Term Survey and Assessment of Large River Fishes in Illinois, started in 1957. Join us as we visit with the staff who also coordinate the fish and vegetation monitoring and research at the Emiquon Preserve, in addition to various other research programs focusing on large river ecosystems. We’ll split into two groups, and alternate between a walking tour of the field station, and a hands-on electrofishing demonstration on the Illinois River. Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear, as you may get up close to some wet and slimy fish on the boat! Open to ages 8 and above as long as accompanied by an adult. Note: Lifejackets will be provided and an IRBS Waiver must be signed. Instructor is Jason Deboer. Fee is $10.

Marvelous Macroinvertebrates (Grade 6th – 9th)-Havana
Tuesday, June 11, 9-11:30am, Begins at SRC Havana Center
Through three main activities—sampling, sorting, and examining samples—students will learn about how to identify aquatic macroinvertebrates and how these creatures can be used as indicators of the health of wetlands and other aquatic systems.  Students will learn to collect macroinvertebrate samples in the wetland using a D-net and then, have the opportunity to examine and identify their samples in the lab utilizing a microscope. This class are for those entering 6th – 9th, as of August 2024. NOTES: Students will wade into the water to collect the samples.  Students will need to provide tall socks to wear with the provided waders, extra clothing in case they get wet, sunscreen, bug spray, hat, drinking water and a sack lunch for eating on-site after the program. In case of inclement weather, a program will be provided indoors at the Field Station. Each participant MUST sign a WAIVER and have it on file with SRC by June 6. Waiver will be emailed to the email on file or it can be picked up and signed at the SRC Havana Campus. Any participants that have not submitted the waiver by June 6th will be removed from the class and refunded. Transportation to Emiquon will be provided by Spoon River College. Fee is $15.00.

Future U (Grades 4th – 6th)-Havana

Spend the week developing skills to help you now and in the future! Learn the basics of money concepts, the benefits of healthy habits, the importance of communication skills, and the ability to problem-solve and deal with conflict. This program is co-sponsored by the Havana Area Prevention Team. This class is for those entering 4th – 6th grade as of August 2024. NOTE: Snacks will be provided during this program. Food Service Sanitation Manger Certification-Macomb
Monday, May 6, 8:30am-3:30pm, SRC Macomb Outreach Center
All establishments which serve food must have one certified person on the premises at all times. In order to obtain a new FSSMC Certificate, you must complete an eight-hour ServSafe® IDPH approved course and pass an exam accredited under the standards developed and adopted by the Conference for Food Protection with a score of 75% or better.  This course, instructed by I Food Manager (IFM), covers up-to-date information on safe food handling, preparation, food storage, personal hygiene, and the prevention of food borne illnesses. Completion of this course does not guarantee you will pass the exam. Students are advised to utilize any study materials provided before attending class. Instructor is Wanda Adkins. Fee is $197.
