Rapped our Report Title III Team members in their typical crazy, out of the box mode rapped their Title III report for Professional Development Day. (see attached picture)
Mandatory Student Success Course and Mandatory English 100 To comply with best practices of mandatory assessment and placement, English 100 (Reading) is now a required course as was approved by committees and College Senate. With the approval of the College Senate bill the course is now required for students who place in the level on the COMPASS test versus previously just a recommended course. In addition to this requirement, the LA 100 Student Success Course was also voted as mandatory for the students who place into two developmental courses. This is effective as of Fall of 2007 and advisors are adhering to these policies. For the future we will be developing the Student Success course online for those that are required to take it but it does not fit into their face-t0-face schedule.
Advisory Faculty Board for ITLC - Lisa Dennis developed an advisory faculty board that will serve as a liaison between the faculty and the Instructional Design Specialist/Learning Specialist. This way the board can serve as consultants for workshops on technology as well as pedagogy. These workshops will be incorporated into plans and events for the ITLC.
Area Planning Council Presentation - Jenny Briney and Becca Werland presented on Title III at the Area Planning Council January 24th at the request of Jody McCamey
Workshops for Students - Numerous workshops for students were held during the semester at the Macomb and Canton campuses. They included Blackboard, Time Management, Testing anxiety, Study Skills, and How to talk to your Instructor.
Faculty Reporting - Faculty returned At-risk Intervention forms at a 100% rate during the Spring semester.
Generations Connect - Jenny Briney and 2 students from the Academic Success Center attended Generations Connect throughout the semester. This is a grant through the Community Education and Workforce Development and Retirees Leading Initiative to connect persons of different generations. One of the luncheons was hosted in the ASC in the Spring semester.

Starlink Program - Title III hosted the Starlink program entitled Developmental Education and Student Services. Several advisors attended the meeting as well as our Havana and Rushville site directors. All who attended or watched the link at a later time felt that it was very worthwhile.
Faculty Training - Presented Title III updates including Learning Communities and COMPASS scores cutoffs/ACT and what they mean at the January Faculty Meeting. COMPASS scores are now on the class lists and training was provided via e-mail for the full and part-time faculty.
Employee of the Month - Lisa Dennis, Title III Learning Specialist, was selected as Employee of the Month. Congrats to our own Lisa Dennis! She is very special to us and obviously impacts the rest of the college community as well. We are so proud of her!!!
Math Homework Hall - Math Homework Hall was started during the Spring Semester with the Math Specialist Karen McGuinness and was very successful.
Testimony from Math Homework Hall - This is a testimony from one of the students who has faithfully attended Math Homework Hall: “At the beginning of my venture back into the college realm after twelve years, I learned that my fear of Mathematics had not dissipated. After testing into Math 015, I was relieved to have Natalie Williams as an instructor. Thankful for her simple patience, I passed the class with a great deal of attention and individual instruction. However, I found it difficult to coordinate my class schedule with her office hours and often found myself seeking other students for instruction. It was increasingly more difficult outside of class when my questions were not answered in a way that suited my learning style and ability by the other students. At the beginning of the current semester, Sara Dalpiaz, my current instructor, informed us of the newly opened Academic Success Center (ASC). With math instruction available during all hours, not limited to just instructor’s office hours, a student could receive the assistance needed at any given time during the day. This became increasingly important for me when, during the middle of the semester, I started struggling with new algebra applications. During my visits to the ASC, Karen McGuinness used a simple approach to problem solving that has embedded itself into my ability to comprehend math. Most recently, I have gone from receiving the second worst test score in the class to receiving the second best score in the class. I firmly believe that my success in Math 060 is directly related to the quality help and the availability of the help that I have found in the ASC. I am certain that the level of knowledge and professionalism shown is beneficial to all the students who enter this center. I sincerely hope that Spoon River College will acknowledge the benefits that the ASC offers the students and continue this program for years to come”.
Nursing tutors - Nursing tutors were added to both the Canton and Macomb Academic Success Centers.
Students Hosted Generations Connect The Academic Success Center hosted the Generations Connect meeting on Friday, March 2, 2007. The Academic Success Center students chose the food and will be sharing with the retirees about their experiences in the ASC.

Jenny's son is the publicist for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. She was the guest of the team as they raced in the Indy Japan 300
Re-design for Math - Jim Genandt, Susan Barnhart, Brian Dalpiaz and Jenny Briney met to discuss the re-design plans for Math. After reviewing other community colleges’ math programs Brian has suggested making the developmental math courses four credit hours. This format would include - three hours of class and adding a two hour math lab with a Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) with the math instructor present. The math instructors will be reviewing possible CAI programs (Hawkes Learning System and ALEKS) in the near future. This recommendation will be discussed further and then taken through governance for approval. Brian Dalpiaz will be present at IMT meeting on June 26, 2007 to report on this re-design. (See attached) Interviews for a Developmental Math Instructor will be held on June 28, 2007. This new faculty member will re-design the curriculum for consistency, set up the additional required math labs using a CAI and teach classes as we pilot the new re-designed Math program. ALEKS - Brian and Sarah Dalpiaz attended a WebEx session demonstrating ALEKS which is a computer assisted instruction (CAI) system for Math. This system is another possibility to supplement the 3 hours of instructional classroom.
Special Learning Needs Certification - Rebecca Bradley Werland completed her eight-day Special Learning Needs Certification offered by Illinois Community College Board's Adult Education staff. The training focused on ways to best accommodate students' various learning styles and needs.
Irlen Overlays - One of the tips that Rebecca learned at the training has already been put to use as the ASC has ordered 2 sets of the Irlen Overlays for student usage. Irlen Method is a non-invasive, patented technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain's ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome. This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention, and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a color-based technology that filters out offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information.
Illinois Central College Visit to SRC - A team from Illinois Central College - Dr. John Avendano, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Development; Dr. Rita Ali, Executive Director of Diversity; David Cook, Manager of Institutional Research; Dr. Leah Adams-Curtis Associate Dean for Social Science and Donald R. Long, Chief Grants Development Officer were on Spoon River College campus on April 25, 2007 to visit the Academic Success Center and talk with the Title III team about the activities of the grant. COMPASS Testing Approval - Title III received approval from the United States Department of Education Title III Program Officer, to implement COMPASS workshops and testing to SRC District high school sophomore students. This is to aid in reducing the number of students who come into SRC underprepared by educating the high school students and their parents on the importance of high school course selection and preparedness for and transition to college
COMPASS Testing - Through a new activity of Title III which was recently approved by our Program Officer at the US Department of Education, we have implemented the program of COMPASS testing sophomores in 5 high schools this semester as a pilot project. This project serves a dual purpose in that it informs the students who are under-prepared what they need to do in the next 2 years of high school to increase their skills and be able to enter the first year at a college level course; it also serves to identify possible dual credit students who can take the college classes during high school. The workshops serve to educate the parents and students about open-enrollment, developmental courses and dual credit. The following is a list of schools, dates and times that Jenny Briney, Angie Conklin and Susan Barnhart administered the COMPASS test to the sophomores as well as followed the testing with workshops to the students and parents. At these workshops the scores were distributed and the explanation was given. All of the data is being collected and entered into a spread sheet. We are also collecting the names and addresses of the parents to send follow-up letters.
