Our Communities

Spoon River College is located in West Central Illinois encompassing a 1,566-square mile district.  The college was named after the Spoon River, a tributary of the Illinois River that runs through the heart of the region.   Cutting a swath from north to south, the Spoon River meanders through rolling hills and valleys; the wooded enclaves that are home to white-tail deer, turkeys, coyotes and red tail fox; and fields of agricultural treasures.

The area was made famous in 1915 with the publication of Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology.  The collection of poems featured the residents of the fictional town of Spoon River.  Although the character names were fictional, many readers at the time believed Masters was actually writing about the people he knew in Lewistown and surrounding communities.

The Spoon River College district is anchored at the four corners by the communities of Canton (Fulton County), Macomb (McDonough County), Havana (Mason County) and Rushville (Schuyler County).  Surrounding towns and communities provide a strong fabric of people, industry, service and agriculture to create a regional center for growth.

  • New industry in recent years has strengthened the economy and provided employment opportunities.
