Approximately 130 students from area high schools attended the Tools for Life transition conference held March 5 at Spoon River College in Canton. The event was sponsored by the Western Regional Transition Planning Committee to give students the opportunity to learn more about transitioning into college or the work force, and about medial issues and balancing their lives as an adult.

(Macomb) -- The Spoon River College Foundation’s Sixth Annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner was the Bee’s Knees event of the Season. The fundraising event was held on Saturday, February 13th at the Spoon River College Outreach Center in Macomb, where the MidAmerica National Bank Conference Hall was transformed into a 1920s Speakeasy. Approximately $22,650 was raised during the evening, making it the most successful CWD to date.

Spoon River College is reporting an increase in enrollment for the Spring 2010 semester. According to Gary Schindler, dean of student services at the college, the headcount for the Spring 2010 semester was at a three-year high, up 5.2% from Spring 2009. Additionally, registered credits and FTE for the Spring 2010 semester were up 3.6%.

WINTER INTERIM A SUCCESS AT SPOON RIVER COLLEGE

In order to provide alternative course delivery options to students, Spoon River College piloted a Winter Interim during the college’s winter break. The five online classes averaged 17 students per class for a total of 86 students who chose to cut their winter vacation short in order to hasten their educational goals. The classes offered were: Accounting, American History, Nutrition, Beginning Algebra with Geometry, and Statistics.

Over the next several weeks, staff from the Spoon River College Financial Aid department will be hosting free Financial Aid informational seminars throughout the college’s district. Students -- from high school juniors to adult learners -- and parents who would like assistance with understanding or completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will have the opportunity to receive assistance from financial aid professionals at these events. According to college officials, completing the FAFSA accurately, and on time, is the first and most important step to obtaining federal and state aid.

Officials at Spoon River College announced today they are conducting a college-wide effort to name a new mascot. This is the do-over, or a second time in three years that the college has initiated a change to the mascot. This second process is the result of a settlement with a minor league baseball club in North Carolina.

Members of Martha Harr’s Freshman Honors English I class at Canton High School recently visited the art department at Spoon River College for a special presentation and project on the WPA (Works in Progress Administration) and how it affected artists of the post-WWII era. The students in this course are studying a wide range of topics for their research papers, which all revolve around post-WWII issues.
INTERACTIVE VIDEO SYSTEM INSTALLED AT SPOON RIVER COLLEGE

In order to better serve all students in the Spoon River College district, a new Telepresence Interactive Video System (IVS) is being installed at the college. This system will allow a class being taught at either Canton or Macomb to be accessed by students at any other SRC site. This technology will especially benefit students at the Havana and Rushville centers, where classes must often be cancelled due to low enrollment. Students will be able to interact with the teacher and other classmates just as if they were in the same room.

With final exams quickly approaching, and faculty wrapping up classes, activity at Spoon River College is winding down. Final exams will be December 14 through 17 at all of the college’s sites. The college will be closed for Winter Break from December 21 through January 3. College offices will reopen on January 4.
ALTERNATIVE COURSE DELIVERY OPTIONS POPULAR WITH SPOON RIVER COLLEGE STUDENTS

The decision to offer a three-week mini-mester during the winter break at Spoon River College has been met with unexpected enthusiasm. Five classes are being offered totally online, and 83 students are currently enrolled. A mini-mester allows students to earn up to 4 credit hours (depending on the course) in only three weeks. Summer mini-mesters are routinely offered at the college.

As part of its Medical Assistant certificate program, Spoon River College will be offering a course in phlebotomy on the Canton and Macomb campuses during the upcoming spring semester. The course will educate students in the proper collection of blood specimens used for diagnostic testing. Phlebotomists work in a variety of healthcare settings including hospital and independent laboratories, medical offices, and non-profit blood collection organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

Seth Weaver, Stephanie Nelson, and Tad Chatten took home first place honors at the Fall Conference of Illinois Post-secondary Agriculture Students (PAS) on Friday, November 6, 2009 on the Canton campus of Spoon River College. Ten Illinois colleges with agriculture programs attended the event, with a total of 175 students taking part in the competitions related to their field of study in agriculture.

The Spoon River College Student Government Association (SGA) at the Macomb Campus recently held a fundraiser for the McDonough County Animal Shelter. Due to the generosity of many individuals, SGA members were able to present over $220.00 and donations of cat and dog food, cleaning supplies, and towels to the shelter. SGA members would like to thank all those who donated, with special thanks to the following: Coca-Cola for donating the drinks; all SGA members who helped in any way, including Natisha Bryant for arranging refreshments; Lucien Winner for helping plan the event, designing the publicity flyer and staffing the event table; Chelsea Noblitt for staffing the event table and helping plan the event; and all Spoon River College students, faculty and staff who donated for this cause.

Students from the Spoon River College AAT (Associate of Arts in Teaching) program were invited to join the Art Department on a recent trip to the Art Institute of Chicago. The AIC has a rich heritage of arts education spanning nearly a century. As the second largest art museum in the United States, the AIC houses a number of areas specially designated for children.

The Spoon River College Foundation's first fundraising campaign in Havana was a huge success. The campaign, which included a lead gift from Dynegy Midwest Generation, the “Last Beach Party” event at Tall Timbers Marina, and the first contributions to the newly established SRC-Havana Wall of Honor raised over $10,000. The proceeds are being used to place additional classroom technology and furniture for the student lounge in the new SRC Havana Center.

The Spoon River College Foundation’s 16th Annual Golf Tournament held at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club on August 14 boasted 27 teams and raised $18,000. The 50th anniversary year is particularly noteworthy as the Foundation will receive a one-to-one dollar match for the monies raised in this year’s outing. The funds raised will be used for student scholarships, faculty research, upgrading technology/facilities, and community projects in Canton. Since 2000, the annual golf tournament has raised over $170,000 to support the Foundation’s programs.

When Cassi Sweet of Lewistown started her freshman year at Spoon River College in the fall of 2007, she had an advantage over many of her peers. She already had 32 college credits under her belt. As a high school student, she had participated in Spoon River College’s dual credit partnership with Lewistown High School. The dual credit program allows eligible high school students to take college-level courses and obtain college credit and, in some programs, high school credit as well. Sweet was able to complete a total of ten classes, most at Lewistown High School but some online.

The Spoon River College Annual Student Art and Design Exhibition will be on display in the Highlight Room (Main Floor of Centers Building on the Canton Campus) from Monday, April 6 to Thursday, April 23. The show contains work in painting, drawing, sculpture, logo design, layout design, mixed media and photography. Works range from abstraction to realism with many creative ideas employed to engage the audience. Many works are available for purchase as well as prints of originals.

As part of Spoon River College’s 50th Anniversary celebration, the SRC Alumni Association is seeking to name 50 individuals to the 50 Golden Guild. The association is inviting nominations to recognize persons associated with the college who had a significant impact on the nominator’s life. The nominated person could be an instructor, maintenance person, office assistant, administrator, or student – anyone associated with the Spoon River College community.

MidAmerica National Bank is supporting Spoon River College’s new Community Outreach Center with a $50,000 contribution. The SRC Community Outreach Center will be located at 2400-2510 East Jackson Street and will include the new “MidAmerica National Bank Conference Hall.” Spoon River College purchased the property in 2006 to expand its educational programs and training services in Macomb. The SRC Community Outreach Center is the first part of the multi-phase development project.

An estimated 250 kids and adults attended Spoon River College’s 50th Anniversary Carnival on Saturday, January 24. In spite of cold temperatures, the free event attracted families from throughout the Canton area for an afternoon of fun. Carnival-style booths featured a variety of entertaining activities with prizes and treats.

Over the next several weeks, staff from the Spoon River College Financial Aid department will be hosting free Financial Aid informational seminars throughout the college’s district. Students -- from high school juniors to adult learners -- and parents, needing help with understanding or completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), will have the opportunity to receive assistance from financial aid professionals at these events. According to college officials, completing the FAFSA accurately, and on time, is the first and most important step to obtaining federal and state aid.

With the recent approval of a Medical Assistant program at Spoon River College by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the college is rolling out the first Medical Assisting course. According to college representatives, enrollments are still being accepted for the course which begins on January 20.

In 1959, a group of visionary citizens initiated the process to establish a junior college in Canton, Illinois. 2009 marks the 50th Anniversary of what started as Canton Community College and has since grown to become Spoon River College with sites in Canton, Macomb, Havana and Rushville. Beginning in January 2009, the college will host events throughout the college district to celebrate the creation of an educational institution that has graduated thousands of West Central Illinois residents who have gone on to make their mark in their hometowns, across the nation, and globally.

Doug Wilson, the Illinois director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, announced Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, that Spoon River College (SRC) will receive a $189,288 grant to implement a state-of-the-art videoconferencing system. The interactive technology will allow them to greatly expand access to many of the school’s programs to residents in their five-county district.

Approved construction contracts with Laverdiere Construction of Macomb for the building of new facilities in Havana and Rushville. The Board approved the award of a construction contract for the Havana construction project in an amount not to exceed $627,705, and for the Rushville construction project in an amount not to exceed $493,412. These contracts do not include mechanical, electrical or plumbing services. Construction on both projects is expected to begin in early November.

RETIREES LEADING INITIATIVE NAMED GOVERNOR'S CUP FINALIST

The Retirees Leading Initiative, a partnership of Spoon River College, the City of Canton and the Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development, was named a 2008 Governor’s Home Town Award Cup Finalist. The award was presented at a banquet held in Springfield on October 20, 2008. During the event, 49 community projects were honored, of which eight were selected Governor’s Cup Finalists.

The Spoon River College Nu Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society sponsored a blood drive on the Canton Campus on Wednesday, Oct. 15. More than 50 units of blood were collected. The drive was in partnership with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

Each year the Spoon River College Foundation recognizes those students who have received scholarships from either Spoon River College or the Spoon River College Foundation. This year the Foundation is hosting events to honor those recipients in the Student Center at the Canton campus on October 7th and on the Macomb campus in the auditorium on October 9th. A complimentary Italian buffet will be served in Canton and a cookie and punch reception in Macomb. Both events begin at 5 p.m. and will conclude before 6:30 p.m. Anyone associated with Spoon River College is welcome to attend either event.

The Emiquon Preserve will be the site of a unique family weekend on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28. The preserve is located northwest of Havana and features over 7,000 acres of wetland, prairie, and woodland recently restored by The Nature Conservancy as part of the Illinois River rehabilitation project.

This year’s outing, held on August 8 at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club, successfully raised $21,500, making it a record-breaking year. Canton, IL—Spoon River College, in partnership with Parlin-Ingersoll Public Library, today announced that it has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host The Big Read in Fulton County. Spoon River College is one of 208 libraries, municipalities, and arts, culture, higher education, and science organizations to receive a grant to host The Big Read from September 2008-June 2009. The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 23 selections from American and world literature. The Big Read in Canton and Fulton County will focus on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Activities will take place beginning in September, 2008 and ending October 31.

Starting with the 2008 Fall semester, Spoon River College will be implementing a four-day schedule for the majority of credit classes on all four campuses. While the college will still be open for business on Fridays, classes will be held Monday through Thursday, with the exception of a few that will continue to meet on Fridays due to course requirements and structure.

STUDENT ARTISTS RECEIVE AWARDS

Spoon River College is currently holding their annual student art and design exhibition called “2008: An Art Odyssey.” The show, exhibited in the Highlight Room on the Canton campus, contains a wide variety of media by over 20 artists. An awards ceremony and judge’s critique were held on Monday, April 21. Winners were chosen in seven categories.

The Spoon River College student senate recently completed a district-wide Teddy Bear Drive, collecting 1,200 teddy bears to be donated to the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago and local area hospitals. The drive was part of a statewide effort coordinated by the ICCB-SAC (Illinois Community College Board of Trustees- Student Advisory Committee.) SRC student trustee, Ashley Mason, coordinated the Spoon River College campaign.

The Spoon River College Nu Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa continues to grow with the addition of twenty new members during the fall semester. Phi Theta Kappa is the largest internationally-recognized honor society for two-year colleges. To be eligible, students must complete a minimum of twelve hours of transferable course work and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

SPOON RIVER COLLEGE PLANS EXPANSION IN RUSHVILLE

Spoon River College has purchased property in Rushville with plans to build a permanent facility for the college’s programs in the Schuyler County community. The college has purchased .57 acres at 710 Maple Avenue from the Schuyler County Extension Education Building Association, located next to the University of Illinois Extension Service offices. The college presently leases facilities located at 229 W. Washington.
