(Macomb) -- The Spoon River College Foundation’s Sixth Annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner was the Bee’s Knees event of the Season. The fundraising event was held on Saturday, February 13th at the Spoon River College Outreach Center in Macomb, where the MidAmerica National Bank Conference Hall was transformed into a 1920s Speakeasy. Approximately $22,650 was raised during the evening, making it the most successful CWD to date.

Spoon River College is reporting an increase in enrollment for the Spring 2010 semester. According to Gary Schindler, dean of student services at the college, the headcount for the Spring 2010 semester was at a three-year high, up 5.2% from Spring 2009. Additionally, registered credits and FTE for the Spring 2010 semester were up 3.6%.

In order to provide alternative course delivery options to students, Spoon River College piloted a Winter Interim during the college’s winter break. The five online classes averaged 17 students per class for a total of 86 students who chose to cut their winter vacation short in order to hasten their educational goals. In order to better serve all students in the Spoon River College district, a new Telepresence Interactive Video System (IVS) is being installed at the college. This system will allow a class being taught at either Canton or Macomb to be accessed by students at any other SRC site. This technology will especially benefit students at the Havana and Rushville centers, where classes must often be cancelled due to low enrollment. The decision to offer a three-week mini-mester during the winter break at Spoon River College has been met with unexpected enthusiasm. Five classes are being offered totally online, and 83 students are currently enrolled. A mini-mester allows students to earn up to 4 credit hours (depending on the course) in only three weeks. Due to the generosity of many individuals, SGA members were able to present over $220.00 and donations of cat and dog food, cleaning supplies, and towels to the shelter. The Spoon River College Foundation’s 16th Annual Golf Tournament held at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club on August 14 boasted 27 teams and raised $18,000. The 50th anniversary year is particularly noteworthy as the Foundation will receive a one-to-one dollar match for the monies raised in this year’s outing. The funds raised will be used for student scholarships, faculty research, upgrading technology/facilities, and community projects in Canton. Since 2000, the annual golf tournament has raised over $170,000 to support the Foundation’s programs.

When Cassi Sweet of Lewistown started her freshman year at Spoon River College in the fall of 2007, she had an advantage over many of her peers. She already had 32 college credits under her belt. As a high school student, she had participated in Spoon River College’s dual credit partnership with Lewistown High School. The dual credit program allows eligible high school students to take college-level courses and obtain college credit and, in some programs, high school credit as well. MidAmerica National Bank is supporting Spoon River College’s new Community Outreach Center with a $50,000 contribution. The SRC Community Outreach Center will be located at 2400-2510 East Jackson Street and will include the new “MidAmerica National Bank Conference Hall.” Spoon River College purchased the property in 2006 to expand its educational programs and training services in Macomb. The SRC Community Outreach Center is the first part of the multi-phase development project.

Approved construction contracts with Laverdiere Construction of Macomb for the building of new facilities in Havana and Rushville. The Board approved the award of a construction contract for the Havana construction project in an amount not to exceed $627,705, and for the Rushville construction project in an amount not to exceed $493,412. These contracts do not include mechanical, electrical or plumbing services. Construction on both projects is expected to begin in early November.

Spoon River College is one of 208 libraries, municipalities, and arts, culture, higher education, and science organizations to receive a grant to host The Big Read from September 2008-June 2009. The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 23 selections from American and world literature. The Big Read in Canton and Fulton County will focus on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Activities will take place beginning in September, 2008 and ending October 31.

Phi Theta Kappa is the largest internationally-recognized honor society for two-year colleges. The college has purchased .57 acres at 710 Maple Avenue from the Schuyler County Extension Education Building Association, located next to the University of Illinois Extension Service offices.
