You’ve heard about Black Friday. You’ve heard about Small Business Saturday. You’ve heard about Cyber Monday.

Have you heard about Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is the charitable response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday – the way to kick off the season of whatever holiday you celebrate by giving…to your favorite charitable organization. This worldwide day of giving takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving – this year, Tuesday, November 30.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30, by making a gift to the Spoon River College Foundation, you have an opportunity to be a part of that movement right here at Spoon River College -- to "SNAP" into the season of giving; to help change lives for good.

We call it #GivingSPOONday.

This year, our goal is 300 separate gifts to the SRC Foundation by the end of the day November 30, 2021.  Whether that gift is $1, $1000, or anything in between or beyond, it counts toward our goal.

Whether or not someone has experienced COVID-19 first hand, we know this pandemic has impacted everyone in one way or another – yourself probably included. Our community college students are not only no exception, they're feeling the impacts as much as anyone. Safety concerns pushed most of SRC's classes online in 2020, many students lacked access to technology to complete their coursework, young parents had to remain home to care for their own children when daycares and schools closed, and most college-aged students were left out of stimulus funding from the CARES Act entirely.  Students continue to face challenges even as we near the two-year mark of this pandemic.

Nearly 80 percent of community college students work to support their education. Due to the pandemic, many students at SRC have seen their income cut – or eliminated entirely. And when 90 percent of first-time, full-time students at SRC already receive some sort of financial aid and 50 percent of survey respondents reported facing food insecurity at some point, losing your income or having unexpected expenses pop up can mean the difference between staying in school and dropping out.

Since March 2020, the SRC Foundation has been shifting its resources where possible to fund Emergency Grants of up to $500 to students who have lost jobs during this pandemic, student technology needs to help keep them in class when classes have moved online, and other ways to help students navigate this pandemic and remain on track for their education.  Over 50 students have remained enrolled thanks to these grants.

The need continues to grow, and more students apply for assistance every day.

Where can my gift help?

In short, anything you want at Spoon River College.  You can direct your gift to any scholarship, program or facility at SRC.

But we especially encourage and appreciate support for our annual fund so that the SRC Foundation can quickly provide in the areas of greatest need at SRC, as the needs for our students have never been greater than they are during this pandemic, and they're shifting quickly during this time of uncertainty.

All gifts are important and appreciated, and you make a huge impact, no matter what you give or where it goes.

Here's what your gift could mean:
  • $5: An art palette for five SRC Art Students
  • $15: A student's welding jacket -- safety first!
  • $25: An hour of teaching for 10 students in our Adult Ed Dept.
  • $30: A teaching stethoscope for a future nurse
  • $50: A new uniform for a student athlete
  • $100: Graphing calculator for LRC student use
  • $150: A student's full tuition and fees for one credit hour
  • $250: A bag of corn seed for our Agriculture Department's Land Lab
  • $500: A faculty grant to bring new, innovative ideas to a classroom
  • $1000: A new classroom projector or a bench at one of our beautiful facilities
