What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is a Course Management System, a type of software that will allow your instructor to post course information online. Some, but not all of your classes may require the use of Blackboard. As a student, you will be provided with login access to Blackboard. Once you have logged in, you will see any course(s) listed that you are enrolled in. The information on this page is intended to assist you with logging in to Blackboard, navigating Blackboard, expectations for online learning, and where to find help if you need it.

Blackboard Student Orientation

The new Blackboard student orientation is located within Blackboard. Here you can click around and "practice" navigating within a sample course. Use the below username and password to login to the orientation. After logging in, click on Blackboard Student Orientation under "Course in which you are enrolled". Please Note: this is a “Guest” login. Please DO NOT change the username for this account. This will prevent other students from accessing the orientation.

General SRC Blackboard Navigation

Upon logging into Blackboard, you will be on the My Institution tab, which lists all the courses you are enrolled in, calendar items, and announcements. This page can be customized by clicking the "Contents" or "Layout" buttons at the top right of the screen. The Courses tab lists only your courses as well as the instructor and course ID.

Once you have entered your course by clicking on the course name, you will notice a menu on the left side of the screen. This is how you will navigate through your course. Note: the below list includes standard menu items. Some instructors may elect to change the name of some of the menu items or remove menu items.

Announcements This is the point of entry for the course website. This page contains timely and important announcements about the course.
Course Information This page contains your course syllabus and may also include other information such as course objectives, academic honesty policies, grading procedures, and any other pertinent information you may need such as plug-ins or other technology required to view documents or files within the course.
Faculty Information This page contains information about the instructor such as contact information (phone, e-mail, office location) and office hours.
Course Documents This section contains most of the content for the course. Depending on the course, you could find any of the following learning materials here: lecture notes, supplemental readings, study resources, chapter notes, etc. Some instructors will include assignments in this area, while others include all assignments in the Assignments section.
Assignments Most instructors use this section to post all assignments on a daily or weekly basis. Each assignment will provide a description and due date. It is very important that you check this page each week, if not daily. It will be helpful to PRINT this page and keep it in your calendar, notebook, or near your computer so that you can reference it frequently.
Communications This area includes Virtual Collaboration, Discussion Board, E-mail, Group pages, Roster, and Send email. (Note, please have your personal information updated (accessible via TOOLS) so that emails can be sent from blackboard.)
External Links This area will list various hyperlinks to relevant course information and resources.
Tools This section includes: Calendar, Digital Drop Box, Edit your Homepage, Electric Blackboard, Personal Information, Student Manual, Tasks, and most importantly, View Grades. This is the link you will access each time your grades are posted for various assignments, quizzes, and exams.
When you're ready to exit the course, always click on the "Logout" icon near the top center of the screen.
