“I believe people have a need to be part of a
community. Being a volunteer in the GED program at Spoon River College provides
me with that feeling of community,” said Tom Pogue of Macomb, a retired
registered nurse who has been tutoring GED students in math since 2012.
Cyndi Johnston, adult education program
coordinator at Spoon River College, would like to find more community members
like Tom Pogue, especially for the classes being held at the SRC Center in Rushville.
“Many of our current volunteers are special
education students of Dr. Mary Jenson at Western Illinois University,” Johnston
said. “They do an excellent job and we are fortunate to have this partnership,
but they are based almost exclusively in Macomb.”
Johnston is also seeking volunteer tutors for her
ESL (English as a Second Language) classes that are taught at the Rushville
Center. ESL classes focus on writing,
reading, and grammar with a special emphasis on listening and speaking.
The ESL classes will be held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 9 – noon, and GED classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from
“My reward is the student’s success, and I would
strongly encourage other retirees that may be looking for a worthwhile way to spend
their free time to consider becoming a volunteer in this program,” said Pogue.

tutor for the GED or ESL classes, contact Cyndi Johnston at (309) 833-6038 or
