Spoon River College Honors Students at Phi Theta Kappa Induction

A total of 84 new members joined the Spoon River College Nu Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa during the 2012-13 academic year, with 40 participating in the induction ceremony on April 23, 2013 at the Macomb Outreach Center.

Inductees and their families  were welcomed by Dr. Randy Greenwell, vice president of instruction and student services;  Rusty Melhouse, SRC Board of Trustees; Charlene Hurston, Phi Theta Kappa chapter president in Macomb; and Tera Stockham, Phi Theta Kappa chapter vice president in Canton. 

Don Norton, CEO/President of Illinois Agriculture Leadership Foundation, delivered the keynote address “Taking Your Life to the Next Level.”

Phi Theta Kappa is the largest internationally recognized honor society for two-year colleges.  Their mission is to recognize academic achievement, promote individual growth and development, and provide opportunities through participation for leadership, service, and continuing scholarship. To be eligible, students must complete a minimum of twelve hours of transferable course work and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.25.

In addition, three current Phi Theta Kappa members were recognized for their achievement in being named to the All-Illinois Academic Team: Danel Delost (Farmington) and Brittany Parker from the Canton Campus, and Debra Johnson (Dixmoor) from the Macomb Campus.

The All-State teams are a division of the All-USA Academic Team for Community, Technical and Junior Colleges, which are sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa, USA Today, and the American Association of Community Colleges.   Students were recognized at the annual Phi Theta Kappa banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield on April 16.

Rebecca Werland, English instructor, is the Canton Campus chapter advisor, and Kay Norton, English instructor, is the Macomb Campus chapter advisor.
